The words 'pencil' and 'risk'.

Mon Apr 20, 2009, 5:00 PM
You wouldn't associate the two, but that's my situation... because I've started to get serious about my comic pencilling, and I've run into a problem. Sometimes, it actually helps when I switch to the detail-position (holding the pencil like you would when you're writing), even if I'm not putting in details. But I've only just gotten used to using the looser position, which is holding the pencil level using all my digits. I really don't want to lose that skill... however, I need to use the technique that works best for the style... just how do you hold your pencil when drawing comics?

I'm pretty sure it's fine to switch between the two, as long as you're 'getting loose' when drawing the figure. I can't just ignore the improvement I saw when I switched to the latter position, but at the same time, when I'm drawing features on the face, it actually helps to tighten my grip... oh, if only I could ask Stan Lee himself! With realistic people, the answer is so obvious, because it's such a refined art... but these are comics! As in, half-cartoon. Maybe that's why I'm switching back and forth more?

:XD:

It's from the movie There Will Be Blood, with Daniel Day-Lewis. Highly recommended, if you haven't seen it.

Ooh, that scene was morbid. I thought it must be from a comedy, because it sounded so silly...

Ha... Yeah, it's definitely unexpected. To say the least. :D
